Overview & Instructions:
Rice University students are invited to submit this online application for partial tuition scholarships during the 2021-2022 academic year to the Rice Global Engineering & Construction (E&C) Forum by Wednesday, March 24, 2021. E&C Forum scholarship awards may range from $500 to $8,000 in value. In special cases if full $8,000 scholarship is awarded, it can be accompanied with a tuition waiver (one semester tuition fee) for research masters students (with approval of the RGECF university liaison).
In addition to the above awards, one $8,000 research scholarship will be awarded.
An applicant can apply for an award in both partial tuition award and research categories.
Members of the E&C Forum’s scholarship committee will give priority to School of Engineering professional masters, terminal research masters (M.S.) students, or seniors for 2021-2022 with potential interest in the engineering and construction industry, or with interest in careers in companies and industries that utilize the services of E&C companies.
The scholarships are only open to all disciplines in the School of Engineering at Rice. The E&C industry historically has hired graduates of chemical, civil, environmental, material science (and Nano-engineering) and mechanical engineering programs at Rice.
To apply for an E&C Forum scholarship, qualified applicants must submit an online application (link below). In addition to completing the information requested, applicants will be required to upload a copy of their unofficial transcript of Rice coursework completed through the fall semester of 2020. Applicants applying for the research scholarship will also be required to upload a short (maximum one page) letter from the Rice professor under which the research is to be conducted briefly describing the research to be conducted and the reason(s) why the applicant is deserving of the award.
Scholarship-award decisions will be made by the E&C Forum’s scholarship committee. Scholarship winners will be notified by approximately April 9, 2021 and all decisions will be final. Evaluation of the applications will be based solely on the information contained in the submitted online form and the accompanying transcript. No interviews with the applicants will be conducted and there will be no requests for clarifications or additional information. Failure to address any of the requested information will result in non-consideration of the application.
If an applicant applies for an award in both partial tuition award and research categories and is successful, the applicant can receive an award in one of the categories. In this case, the category in which the award will be made will be decided by the E&C Forum’s scholarship committee.
Scholarship funds will be submitted directly to Rice University to be used to defray tuition and fees for the 2021-2022 academic year. Students already receiving full financial support from Rice are thus not eligible for the scholarship.
In the following Application Form, applicants are requested to provide the following information.
• Applicant’s name, contact information, degree major and present class (junior, senior or fifth year);
• Category of award being applied for: Scholarship, Research, Both;
• Career interests and goals;
• Academic objectives;
• Likely coursework during 2021-2022;
• Research objectives or professional master’s project;
• Any committed or likely partial financial support from Rice or other scholarship sources for the 2021-2022 academic year; and
• A brief paragraph stating the reasons why you think that you should be deserving of the award.
Need is a major criteria in determining the scholarship award. The applicant’s reasons requesting the award should include an explanation of how the applicant will benefit from the scholarship in terms of their continuing education and/or why they have a particular need for the scholarship. How the applicant’s work or future might relate to and/or benefit the Engineering and Construction industry is also of interest to the committee. This may include a career interest, development of new tools, development of new processes or research that will advance the art. Finally, the committee considers how the applicant has used their time and talents to benefit others and advance their knowledge through their participation in clubs, volunteer activities, research and other activities.
