Topic:

“Saudi Arabia, Iran and the Middle East”

Dr. Richard Stoll is the Albert Thomas Professor of Political Science at Rice University, and a Baker Institute Rice Scholar. Utilizing his interests in the study of international conflict and American national security policy, Dr. Stoll will discuss the current actions of Iran with the drone attack on Saudi Arabian petroleum infrastructure, the motivation for those actions, and what Iran expects to achieve in the Middle East, and to a greater extent, in Europe and the Western World as a result of these actions.

Dr. Stoll will discuss both the historic and current relationship between Iran and Saudi Arabia and the general geopolitical climate currently within the Middle East.

Additionally, Dr. Stoll will also provide some thoughts concerning actions the United States should take with both Iran and Saudi Arabia, and the historical relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia relative to export of petroleum and the defense of The Kingdom from attack by Iraq.

Dr. Richard “Rick” Stoll, Albert Thomas Professor of Political Science, Rice University & Baker Institute Scholar, James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy

Richard Stoll is the Albert Thomas Professor of Political Science at Rice University. He is also a Baker Institute Rice Scholar. He grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester, and his doctorate from the University of Michigan. He came to Rice in 1979. His research interests are in the study of international conflict, American national security policy, and the use of computer simulation. He has published six books and a number of articles and book chapters. In 1992 he wrote a memo to Rice’s president George Rupp proposing the idea of the Baker Institute. He has served as the Associate Dean of Social Sciences, and prior to that, as Associate Director of Rice’s James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy. During his time at Rice, he has won ten teaching awards. In 1989, Jones College named their TV room “Stoll’s” in his honor and in 2007, Jones College named its Outstanding Faculty Associate Award after him. He has been a proud member of the Jones College Beer-Bike Pit Crew since 1988. In 2009 he was a recipient of the Association of Rice Alumni’s Meritorious Service Award. In 2013 he received the Excellence in Advising Award, and in 2016 he received an award for Exemplary Service to the School of Social Sciences.

Detailed campus maps are available on the web at http://www.rice.edu/maps/. The Ley Student Center is located in the central part of Rice campus. The Central Campus Garage, which is the closest parking facility, is located to the across the street from the Student Center.

In the possibility the underground parking is full, the second closest parking is the West Lot. Continue down the Laboratory Loop Road to the stop sign. The campus also offers a bus shuttle that runs about every 15 minutes as it loops the campus.
